ROF

What movement does she perceive? What story does she interpret? What is her true movement? ROF is the first result of Sveinbjörg’s dance research, ‘All movement has a mind in time and space’, which aims to connect the internal state of the body to a certain state of mind in time with movement and choreography. How can the movement of the mind reach its peak in relation to the idea of time?

In 2021, I had the opportunity to work on an Icelandic production of the dance performance ROF. As part of this collaboration, I worked on motion-controlled sound design for dance movement. ROF performance premiered in December 2021 in Tjarnarbíó Theatre (Reykjavik), was later presented at Reykjavik Dance Festival, and brought back to the stage in September 2022. During this collaboration, I worked closely with composer Valgeir Sigurðsson, dancer Halla Þórðardóttir and the choreographer/director Sveinbjorg Þórhallsdóttir to develop gesturally controlled instruments that would elevate the dancer's movement and keep the audience's focus on the dancer, not the technology. The 'Wave’ gestural controllers by Genki Instruments were hidden in the seams of the costume, making them almost impossible to notice. As part of this collaboration, my work also involved the technical stage development and setup, including devising methods for extending the Bluetooth capabilities of the controllers.
